EFFAT joins 250,000 in Berlin in demonstration against TTIP

12/10/2015

EFFAT joined scores of people who marched in Berlin on Saturday 10 October to oppose TTIP, the free trade deal between the European Union and the United States which is expected to be detrimental to food safety and to lower environmental standards. Anti TTIP activists also rallied against CETA (EU/Canada) and the TISA agreement.

Trade unions, environmental groups, charities and opposition parties took part in the march from the railway station in central Berlin to the national parliament. According to activists, 250,000 people turned up for the event.

A large delegation from the IUF-affiliated Italian food workers union FLAI-CGIL was among the international trade unions that travelled to Berlin to show opposition to the agreement.

Demonstrations were held across Europe in a week of actions which included the collection of three million signatures, calling on the Commission to reverse its support for the deals and hold a hearing in the European Parliament. The Commission has rejected the petition.
